The opal was introduced in Greece in the first centruy BC. Opal has been translated as the "seeing jewel" and literally as "seeing changes" of colors. Opal is different from other gemstones in that it is non-crystalline in nature. The opal is related to it's highly crystalline cousins, quartz and agate, however it is more like glass and consists of amorphous structures of silicon dioxide and water. The structure of opal includes different sizes of tiny spheres of silicate. It is the size, density, and arrangement of the spheres that create the varied colors from which the term "opalescence" is coined. Opal can consist of up to 20% water content; precious opals contain up to 6-10% water content. Precious opals make up a very small percentage (5% of 5%) of all opals mined. The structure of precious opals consists of highly arranged arrays and lines of the tiny spheres that act as prisms creating all the colors of the rainbow. Depending on the number of shells around the spheres, different colors will predominate in the opal such as blues, greens, or reds.

The myth that opals can bring misfortune or should not be used if not your birthstone originated in 1829 when Sir Walter Scott published a novel, "Anne of Geierstein" where the heroin's misfortunes were linked to the opal. The opal has been used throughout the centuries for it has been considered a stone of good luck, hope, prosperity, love, vision, and healing.
